Let There Be LOVE Wall Letters

All the craft stores these days have letters of varying sizes that you can decorate and hang on the wall. Then there are the stores like PB Teen, Pottery Barn (for adults!) and Pier 1 Imports that have oodles of options for wall letters that are ready to hang.

Now you can create your own stunning wall letters using the Let There Be LOVE machine embroidered appliqué letters. This is how to do it:

Stitch a letter onto a piece of fabric that’s the same color as your appliqué shape. Just in case you’re wondering why you need an appilqué shape if it’s the same color as the background fabric, it will give your finished letter some nice extra body. Trim around the edges leaving about 3/8″ of background fabric. Remove all stabilizer from around the outside of the appliqué shape. I like to use OESD Heavyweight Tearaway stabilizer for this kind of project.

Apply some fusible webbing to the top of a piece of chipboard or heavy card stock. Cut using the same template used for the appliqué shape – making sure that the fusible webbing is on the “right side” of the letter. If you’re using an electronic cutting machine to cut the chipboard/card, set the blade depth to 6 (for both Brother ScanNCut and Silhouette Cameo).

Using a sharp, pointed pair of scissors, clip into each corner and around any curves. (Click on the image to see a larger version which will show you where I clipped the letter E)

Now it’s time to use up all those itty bitty bits of fusible webbing that are left over at the end of most machine embroidered appliqué projects. Cut a bunch of 1/4″ wide strips of fusible webbing – you’ll use all kinds of lengths, so use up whatever scraps you have on hand.

Cut a little dab of fusible webbing and fuse into each corner of the background fabric as shown.

Remove the backing paper from the fusible webbing, fold each corner in and fuse in place.

Apply fusible webbing to some non-adjacent edges. I like to do the straight edges first as they are slightly easier!

When you get to the curves, cut shorter pieces of fusible webbing to get around the curve.

Soon you’ll have all of the background fabric folded to the back and fused down.

Take the chipboard that has been prepped with fusible webbing on it. Center it onto the back of the main letter and fuse it into place. You might need to hold the iron in place a little longer than usual so that the heat from the iron can get through the chipboard.

Turn over and enjoy your beautifully finished wall letter! Letters can be stuck to the wall using double sided mounting tape. (Test in an inconspicuous place first to make sure it doesn’t pull the paint off the wall when you want to remove it.)

  1. Hello Sarah;
    Thank you for sharing your ideas and creativity with everyone. I love the look of your “DREAM” letters on the wall. What is the actual size of the letters pictured above. Did you use the Bernina Jumbo hoop? Is it possible to enlarge the letter to fit the larger hoops?
    Thank you.

    • Hi Kathy,
      The letters are about 7.5″ tall. They will fit into the BERNINA Maxi and Jumbo hoops. I don’t recommend enlarging them as all sorts of things can get messed up.
